People with high blood pressure need this B vitamin

If you have high blood pressure, make sure you’re getting enough fresh fruits and vegetables. They’re rich in the B vitamin known as folate, and a study published online March 15, 2015, by The Journal of the American Medical Association found that people with high blood pressure who took folate along with the blood pressure medicine enalapril (Vasotec) were less likely to have had a stroke during the four-and-a-half-year trial than those who took enalapril alone. The study looked at more than 20,000 people in China with high blood pressure who’d never had a stroke or heart attack. The recommended daily intake of folate is 400 micrograms. Folate is found in many foods, especially green leafy vegetables, beans, and citrus fruits. In the United States, the vitamin is added to most grain products.
